B+ is my new mantra, meaning BE POSITIVE! For those of you who know me, you know that I believe that “Attitude Drives Outcomes”. It is the single most important asset we have as individuals and as a company culture. Our attitude individually and as a community gives us the power to achieve greatness together, to beat the competition, deliver amazing customer results and differentiate in the marketplace. I firmly believe that attitude is more important than aptitude. Knowledge is powerful but in today’s always connected world we all have access to a wealth of knowledge but attitude is something that will define your character and our culture and drive us forward through difficult times, attract the right people and determine the outcomes of our encounters.
Aptitude is the innate potential to acquire a skill with practice. I often hear the mantra ‘‘Hire for attitude, train for skills’. According to management consulting company McKinsey & Company 57 % of businesses say they’re facing a critical shortage of appropriately skilled entry-level workers. I understand that skills are important but they can be trained and learned on the job. But a bad attitude is something that will inhibit your career, and impact both your personal and professional life and overall limit your potential as a human being.
In today’s society I find that communication skills are sorely lacking and they are so critically important to being successful in business and in relationships. There are many things in life that we can not control but attitude is 100% in our control and I believe it is one of the most important factor to living a successful life.
“Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.” Charles R. Swindoll
I love this quote from pastor and educator Charles R. Swindoll who believes the following:
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company…a church…a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you. We are in charge of our attitudes.”
Over 10 years ago I met a lovely older woman walking at the beach at sunset in San Diego, We shared appreciation and thankfulness for the beauty that was around us and as we were going on our separate ways she told me something that stuck with me all of these years later, she said “Have a great day…it’s always a choice”. It took a moment to sink in, but she was absolutely right it is always a choice!
So as you approach the challenges throughout your day remember to be thankful and appreciate your blessings and always remember that your attitude determines your outcomes.
Have a great day…it’s always a choice!
